“A TOTAL of 55 racketball players from all over the country descended upon The Manor in Ilkeston on Saturday to take part in one of the eight national one-day events in the UK Racketball Series, the Manor event being sponsored by Sandicliffe.

Across the six categories, ranging from Beginner through to the elite ‘A’ grade, 11 players represented the Manor – Nigel Millington, Gary Swift, Neil Tatham, Ant Horsley, Pete Goodings, Curtis Tomlinson, Ian Jackson, Dave Hudson, Jamie Hissett, James Healey and John Noakes.

Notable performances came from Nigel Millington, winning the Over-50s, Pete Goodings reaching the final of the ‘A’ Grade, Curtis Tomlinson narrowly missing out on reaching the ‘A’ grade final and Jamie Hissett coming runner-up in the beginners, so a good day out for the Manor crew.

Everyone else played their hearts out from 9am right through until 7pm with all matches being the best of three games to 11 points. Some matches were over in the blink of an eye while other matches lasted well over 40 minutes with ages of players ranging from 16-60.

For a full report on the event and an overview of what racketball is all about, visit www.uk-racketball.com

If anyone wants to come and try the sport of racketball for the first time, the Manor is open to anyone in the local area. Just call the reception team on 0115 930 5027 or ask to book in with coach John Robinson.”

Soul and Motown night at the Manor

Over £200 was raised at a charity event held at the Manor Health and Racquets at the weekend.

The club hosted a Soul and Motown night on February 21st, which featured music from a DJ and a raffle to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer.

‘The General’, Paul Oldham, organised the event on behalf of Ian Jackson, who is currently raising money for the charity.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the least funded areas of research, and the survival rate is still only 8%, the same as it was 20 years ago.

Bar manager, Ali Haycock, said: “I’d like to thank all those that supported the Soul & Motown night last night. It was a great turnout & lovely to see so many of you there.”

£230 will be donated from entry fee and raffle ticket sales.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all that attended and gave so generously.

Annette Hayden, Club manager, said: “The evening was a huge success with all the members showing their support for the club and raising money for the charity. A big thank you to the DJ who provided the music and made everyone get up and enjoy themselves by having a dance!”

The next event to be held at the Manor will be a Wedding Fayre Open Day on Sunday 8th March between 12-4pm.

Motown Event

The Manor Health and Racquets are hosting a charity Motown event on Saturday 21st February.

Tickets can be purchased from reception at the cost of £1, of which proceeds will go to charity.

The night will start at 7:30pm and will include a live singer, a Motown DJ, and some food.

Supporting Ian Jackson’s bid to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer, the event is set to be a fun and lively night.

We hope to see you there!

England international Sue Smith claimed the title for the Women’s over 40’s.

She said: “It was a very enjoyable competition thanks to the players, markers and organisers.

“I am usually a runner up in these competitions so it feels great to have won the over 40’s plate.”

Manor help spread the word about cancer

IMG_1005

Ilkeston’s Manor Health and Racquets Club racquetball team have become the first to be sponsored by a national charity.

Prostate Cancer UK have provided the team with t-shirts to wear during their participation in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Leagu
e, in order to raise awareness about the disease.

The club have raised approximately £500 through the sale of bands, key rings, and badges, donations from members, and events held at the club.

Friday 28th November saw a Doubles Racquetball tournament held at the Manor Squash Club, which included charity challenges and a presentation night afterwards.

Don Davis, organiser of the sponsorship, said: “The club have been very supportive and the donations and involvement from members has been amazing.”

The tournament featured some of the club’s most talented players, with Neil Tatham and Ant Horsley being crowned winners of the night.

Neil said: “With a bit of luck and fitness we topped off a great night with a win, but the most important thing was the money raised for the charity.”

A second Motown themed charity night is to be held at the Manor on February 21st 2015, where members hope to raise even more money for the charity.

Over 40,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.

The Men United campaign began earlier this year with comedian Bill Bailey supporting thousands of football fans to ‘man up’ and regularly check for signs of cancer.

New cancer scanning suite opened thanks to Manor member

Val Jackson

A new cancer scanning suite has been reopened at Ilkeston Community Hospital thanks to fundraising efforts of a Manor member, Ian Jackson.

Ian’s dad, Keith Jackson, and his family raised more than £73,000 in order to provide a second scanner for the Val Jackson suite, which was facing closure due to the low standard of the room and equipment.

In 1988 Keith’s wife, Val, passed away after suffering from Ovarian Cancer. It was one of her last wishes that Ilkeston Hospital could have facilities for treatment, to prevent patients having to travel to Nottingham or Derby to get the care they need.

Only six weeks after her death, her husband started fundraising to make her wish come true. Following his death in 2007, Keith’s family have continued to support the work of their father and the local community.

September 17th saw the launch of the scanner, which helps detects early signs of cancer.

The Val Jackson Scanner Suite was reopened by the High Sheriff of Derbyshire David Coleman, with family members and local fundraisers invited for a tour of the refurbished facilities. David Coleman said: “We are in debt to what Val’s legacy has left to us.”

The scanner, which is expected to help over 150 people per week, has been funded by events hosted by the Rotary Club and the League of Friends, who put on fashion shows, race nights, raffles and quiz nights.

Prem Singh, Chairman of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trusts, which controls Ilkeston Hospital, also paid tribute to the work of the family. He said: “The refurbished facilities are excellent and provide brilliant private areas for patients, for care that is dignified and respects their privacy. Facilities make it a nice environment for staff and patients, and happy staff make happy patients.”

After years of fundraising, the family are proud of what the community has achieved, and what they have been able to provide for those that find themselves battling cancer.

The couple’s son, Ian Jackson, said: “We are so thankful for the support that the League of Friends and the Rotary Club have given us to keep my mother’s legacy alive. We are so proud of the work that Keith did to fulfil his wife’s wishes.”

Outstanding campaign sees Manor claim racquetball title

IMG_8544

Ilkeston’s Manor Health and Racquets Club are welcoming in 2015 as winners of the Derbyshire
Premier Racquetball League 2013-14.

A 20-0 victory over LA Fitness saw the Manor 1 team clinch the title and win the league by just one point.

Following a strong start to the season, players faced tough competition from teams including Repton, Burton and David Lloyd, to finish with 15 wins and two losses.

The final game, held at the Manor Health and Racquets Club, saw outstanding performances from Curtis Tomlinson and Ant Horsley, both of them ended the season undefeated.

Ant said: “It was a great team effort. We are all really looking forwards to focusing on winning again next season.”

Highlights of the season included beating Duffield 1 by 20-1, and Burton 2 by 20-0.

These wins were closely followed by two losses due to injuries and players being away, but the team remained undefeated for their next 11 matches.

The squad was of a very high standard, which also included fine performances from Neil Tatham, James Healey, Paul Oldham, Steve Scott, Kieran Edmonds, Adam Corrigan, Paul Cook, Dave Hudson and Don Davis.

Neil Tatham said: “It’s been a tough season with a lot of ups and downs, but with the strength and depth of the squad we’ve been able to pull off a memorable win.”
